St Catherine’s Matrics Excel

Our Class of 2020 did themselves and the school proud in the recent matriculation examinations which were conducted by the Independent Examinations Board (I.E.B).

Twenty-nine candidates were entered to write the exam and the group achieved a 100% pass rate. This is the eleventh consecutive year that all pupils could boast with a matric certificate. The class achieved a 97% exemption rate with 28 candidates receiving a Bachelor’s Pass enabling them to register for a first degree at a university. Only one candidate was awarded a Diploma Pass which qualifies him for tertiary study at the level of a Diploma or Higher Certificate.

The school’s Valedictorian for 2020, Yakira Naina, achieved a total of 6 distinctions for Accounting, Afrikaans, English, Geography, Life Orientation and Mathematics. She was closely followed by Jared Botha who gained 5 distinctions for Accounting, Afrikaans, English, Life Sciences and Mathematics. Cecilia Vermaak rounded out the top three achievers with distinctions for Afrikaans, English, History and Life Orientation. In addition, several pupils also achieved multiple distinctions which ranged between three and one. The average number of distinctions per pupil stands at 1,5, and this serves as testimony to the diligence of the pupils and the dedication of the staff.

The Head of School, Mr Dennis Maritz, extended his warm congratulations to the pupils and also the team of Senior School teachers under the leadership of Mrs Joanne Crosby.

“I salute your passion and commitment during a year that was fraught with challenges and disruptions. You set an outstanding example and you went the extra mile to ensure that our pupils were emotionally strengthened and intellectually prepared to overcome this hurdle. Our young people and the school owe you an enormous debt of gratitude,” he commented when releasing the results to the staff earlier in the week.

The school invited the Class of 2020 to morning tea on Friday 19 February, where results were officially handed over to each pupil. Our Region Prioress, Sr Stephany Thie,l and the Chairman of the Board, Mr Joe Mashao, were also present to extend their good wishes to staff and pupils.
