The Lions will have 9 players unavailable for the Super Rugby Unlocked clash with the Cheetahs this weekend due to Covid-19 protocols. Dr. Rob Collins, team doctor, said that four players had tested positive during the mandatory round of testing earlier in the week.
Two players had shown symptoms and the rest of the players who were in contact with them were tested. Dr. Collins said that the two players that were symptomatic are already on the mend and the outbreak were potentially less clustered than initially thought.
Collins also confirmed that the two Stormers had to be withdrawn as well because they came in contact with the Lions that became symptomatic after the match.
“One player developed symptoms on Monday, which is in the 48-hour window after the match against the Stormers” Collins said.
There have been rumours of some players at other unions exhibiting symptoms but testing negative, though Collins said no such situation had been present at Ellis Park.
Kick-off for the game against the Cheetahs on Saturday will be 16:30
