Serial hitchhiker rapist sentenced to seven life terms in prison

A serial rapist that preyed on women seeking lift along the N2 highway in Grabouw, Western Cape was sentenced to several life sentences by the Strand Regional Court this week. Sinaye Siqhuma committed the rapes in 2018, the same year he was arrested.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said the 29-year-old serial rapist targeted women hitchhikers walking along the N2 highway near Grabouw.

“He won their trust by offering assistance as they hitchhiked,” said the police spokesperson.

According to the police report, Siqhuma accompanied three women – aged between 20 and 30 – on separate occasions during the period of November and December 2018.

He reportedly offered the victims a lift to Sir Lowry’s Pass before luring them to a secluded area and raping them.

The serial hitchhiker rapist was arrested near the end of December 2018, following a thorough investigation by detectives.

Siqhuma faced seven rape charges and was found guilty and sentenced for all.

“The well-prepared case dockets and DNA evidence were presented before the court. He was convicted on seven charges of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment on all seven charges.

“The sentences will be served concurrently and Siqhuma will effectively be confined to a prison cell for life,” said Traut.

Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile praised the prosecuting team for removing “the ruthless rapist from society.”
