Rand Water comment on SAMWU Strike

SAMWU threaten that Gauteng taps could run dry from Wednesday

Members of the South African Municipal Worker’s Union (SAMWU) and workers at Rand Water have said they will embark on an indefinite strike starting from Wednesday 21 April 2021.

SAMWU has successfully referred a dispute to the CCMA regarding the unilateral change of conditions of employment and service for workers at Rand Water as communicated by the employer to workers on the 31st of March 2021.

Mamorena Madisha, Gauteng Deputy Provincial Secretary said, “The employer has already been informed of our intentions to go on strike from the 21st April. Despite the CCMA ruling in the union’s favour the employer has decided that they will not comply with the order.”

“The decision that we have taken as SAMWU to go on strike is a painful one as we know that taps will definitely run dry in all areas that are serviced by Rand Water. However this is noble, justifiable and well within our rights.”

Workers are demanding a R4,000 salary increase, R3,500 housing allowance, R15,000 sectoral minimum wage, 80% employer medical aid contribution and 20% employee contribution, 25% employer contribution towards pension and a six months fully paid maternal leave and one month fully paid paternal leave.

Rand Water said in a statement that they have received a written notification from SAMWU of its intention to embark with strike action from 8h00 on Wednesday, 21 April 2021.

“The Union has forwarded that the organisation had failed to consult with it, before making a decision not to pay its employees performance incentive bonuses, as its reason for the strike action. Rand Water disputes this.

Mindful of the eminence of the COVID-19 pandemic and conscious of our mandate to ensure an uninterrupted service, Rand Water would like to inform the public that we have adequate systems in place to ensure a sustained supply of bulk potable water to our customers.” Rand Water’s Justice Mohale said.

“We remain committed to engaging with the Union to reach a resolution.”

Details of the strike are as follows:

Date: from 21 April 2021

Time : from 08:00

Venue: Rand Water Head Offices, 522 Impala Road,Glenvista
