Police launch investigation after teen drowns in public pool

A 13-year-old boy was confirmed dead at Meyerton Public Pool on Sunday, following a fatal drowning accident. Police arrived on the scene yesterday to assess the ‘mysterious circumstances’ that claimed the teen’s life.

Paramedics arrived at the public pool early in the afternoon. Attempts to resuscitate the boy proved futile, and CPR efforts fell short. The Meyerton facility is now under a SAPS investigation, as authorities search for much-needed answers.

ER24 were the first responders on the scene. They confirmed a number of details about the drowning and revealed that police arrived at the public pool shortly after the boy was confirmed to have passed away.

“A boy, believed to be 13-years-old, was declared dead following a fatal drowning at a pool in Meyerton on Sunday. When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly before 13:30, they found lifeguards performing CPR on the boy. Paramedics continued with the CPR, but unfortunately despite the efforts of all involved the boy’s vital signs rapidly diminished.”

“Unfortunately, he was declared dead at the scene shortly afterwards. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not known to our paramedics, but police were on the scene for further investigations at the Gauteng public pool.”

ER24 Gauteng statement on the drowning of a young boy at Meyerton’s public pool

As the summer months emerge this season, public pools will be used more and more frequently. A country that has gone eight months in lockdown wants to get out and maximise the opportunities that weren’t available earlier in the year. However, this incident in Meyerton serves as a timely warning for youngsters all across South Africa.
