Proudly SA News: Leonardo DiCaprio to produce series on Lauren Beukes’s novel.

SA author Lauren Beukes is on cloud nine after the international tech and media giant Apple signed  for a series based on her 2013 best-selling novel The Shining Girls, produced by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, TimesLive reported.

The series centres on a depression era drifter who is on a mission to murder “shining girls”, namely bright young women filled with potential. He stalks them, leaving clues on their bodies, until one of his victims survives and starts hunting him.

The series will star Elisabeth Moss as the Chicago reporter who survived the assault and hunts for her attacker.

Elisabeth and Leonardo, through his company Appian Way, will executive produce the series.

Lauren told TshisaLIVE she was thrilled to have her book made into an international series, and said Leonardo’s company and MRC Television reserved the rights to make the series before it was published.

“Development takes a long time. Most books that are optioned never make it to screen. It’s about chemistry and finding the right talent, in this case show runner Silka Luisa, a phenomenal young writer who wrote a killer pilot which piqued the interest of Elizabeth, who came on board last year to star and be an executive producer.”

Lauren revealed there had been a bidding war between networks for the series, with Apple winning the rights.

She said shooting would probably only start in the middle of next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lauren hopes the deal will inspire more international production companies and networks to take a look at SA talent.

“It’s so surreal and amazing. It means a lot for my career and the possibility of some of my other work making it to film. Mostly, I hope it will spike interest in other South African adaptations. I can think of a few projects I’d love to see make it to film, from Mohale Mashigo’s short stories to Masande Ntshanga’s Triangulum.”

Lauren described it as a “lightning strike of luck and success”, but said it came from years of hard work and perseverance.

“It helps when you’re out there holding a lightning rod. This isn’t a lottery win or an overnight success. I have built and built and built. You have to keep doing the work, keep writing, keep putting it out there. It’s taken me 12 years and five novels to get here.”

ENTERTAINMENT: SA Wine Farm earns World’s Best title at Sparkling Wine Awards

After the hardships faced by the wine industry in South Africa over the last few months; this incredible news about Durbanville Hills Sparkling Wine is simply the best!

In a show-stopping moment for the locally produced Méthod Cap Classique (MCC), the Durbanville Hills Blanc de Blancs vintage 2015 was crowned as the World’s Best Bottle Fermented Sparkling Wine at the 2020 World Sparkling Wine Awards announced in London.

Beating fierce competition from eight countries around the globe, including France, New Zealand and Italy, the Durbanville Hills Blanc de Blancs triumphed over the 45 entries received.

The international panel of judges praised the locally produced MCC as “Pleasantly aromatic, with a good balance of fruit. The bubbles are fine here, which results in a more refined mouthfeel; the body is excellent, and there are complex hazelnut and toasted brioche notes with smooth soily elements.”

Cellar master Martin Moore, says it is an unbelievable honour to be awarded as the World’s Best.

“If one considers the fast number of sparkling wines made across the globe, this award is incredible recognition for the quality that South African wines bring to the world stage. Our Blanc de Blanc is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes and made in the traditional Champagne method of secondary fermentation in the bottle. As a varietal, Chardonnay thrives under the cool climate conditions of the Durbanville area and the variety of slopes and altitudes allows us to craft wines that are firmly rooted in the unique terroir found here.”

“The interest from consumers to add sparkling wines to our portfolio sparked the creation of the Blanc de Blancs a few years ago and since then we have added two more for their enjoyment. Consumers are now more than ever aware of the exceptional quality that South African sparkling wines can offer them, and this award is simply the cherry on top!”

Blanc de Blancs (meaning “white of whites”) is arguably the most elegant style for sparkling wine. With its beautiful finesse and crisp acidity, it makes for a lovely aperitif and is a joy when paired with food.

The grapes for the Durbanville Hills Blanc de Blancs were hand-selected from a single block situated 250 metres above sea level on the hill opposite the winery. The coolness of the southern slope ensured a firm acidity and the selection was based on the immaculate uniformity of the berries. In the cellar secondary fermentation took place in the cool, controlled climate of the maturation cellar, and the wine was matured for a further 36 months on the lees, with the sediment then removed by the traditional method of remuage and disgorgement.
