Gauteng weather: Severe thunderstorm warning, stay inside, says SAWS

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng on Thursday, 6 January. The affected areas include the City of Tshwane, East Rand and Heidelberg areas.

GAUTENG WEATHER WARNING

According to the thunderstorm weather warning, the inclement weather in Gauteng is expected to last from 15:00 until 23:59 on Thursday.

The potential impacts include localised flooding of susceptible roads and low lying bridges, as well as informal settlements, as heavy downpours are expected.

The weather service added that minor vehicle accidents due to poor visibility conditions may occur; isolated hail damage can be expected and strong damaging winds are likely.

“Stay indoors, if outdoors seek shelter immediately but DO NOT seek shelter under trees, telephone lines and power lines.

“Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes,” warned the weather service.

Residents in the affected areas are also encouraged to avoid outdoor activities as lightning strikes may result in injuries – while indoors it is best to stay clear of windows. Pets should be sheltered and vehicles should be covered.

The affected areas include: Atteridgeville, Centurion, Akasia, Mamelodi, Culinan, Tembisa, Boksburg, Witbank, Middelburg, Groblersdal and more.
