Farm attack, farmer shoots one attacker dead

A farmer based in Boschkop near Pretoria, Gauteng has shot an intruder dead at his property. The 62-year-old was targeted by a gang on Saturday, but one of the three attackers was killed at the scene. Police have now been left with little alternative but to open a ‘murder case’ while investigating the victim’s self-defence claims.

The law of using lethal force in your own home is something of a grey area in South Africa. Essentially, you’re allowed to use ‘equal force’ to that used by a criminal in question. If this gang was armed, the law should favour the farmer. Somewhat shockingly, the landowner was attacked by thugs earlier this year in July.

Although he emerged from that altercation relatively unscathed, it seems he was not willing to let lightning strike twice. During the attack in July, the farmer and his wife locked themselves in the bathroom after shots were fired into their home.

Attacking pre-emptively, the unnamed male called for help from his neighbours immediately after discharging his firearm. Police are continuing their investigations, as the two remaining suspects each face a charge of ‘attempted house robbery’.

“A farmer of the Boschkop area north of Pretoria shot one attacker dead after his house was attacked by three men on Saturday 21 November 2020. It was the second attack on his farmhouse this year.”

“The farmer fired shots in self-defense and called his neighbors for help after his alarm was activated around 21:00. The body of one attacker was found after help arrived. The farmer and his wife were also attacked in July 2020.”

“At that time the attackers gained entry into the house and fired shots through the bedroom door. The farmer and his wife barricaded themselves in the bathroom in July whilst the attackers stole items from the house.”
