Gauteng parents who registered their children for grade 1 and 8 will start receiving placement offers via SMS from October 1.
This was confirmed by Gauteng MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Lesufi also revealed that the placement roll-out would end on November 30.
“Because we are doing this thing programmatic and to avoid confusion, not everyone will receive the SMSs on the same day,” explained Lesufi.
Parents will be given seven days to accept the school placement or risk losing the spot.
“The reason why we are giving you seven days or forfeit is because last year we had to incur a lot of costs urging parents to accept [the offer]. It creates serious problems because it creates a log jam for those who are in waiting,” said Lesufi.
“So, because we don’t need anything from you. We just need you to accept that we have given you this space. If you have decided to take your child to another school, another province or a private school just indicate so we can offer that space to another parent.”
Lesufi warned parents that his department has space for close to 374 000 grade 1 and 8 pupils, but have already received nearly 410 000 applications.
