The department of basic education presented its Covid-19 plan for schooling to parliament’s portfolio committee.

The department of basic education presented its Covid-19 plan for schooling to parliament’s portfolio committee.

They have discussed the following school dates which will be confirmed later on.

Teachers will return to school on 4 May. Screening of pupils and educators will be done at the re-opening of the schools.

Here are the dates they discussed and to be confirmed

  • Grade 7 and Grade 12 – 6 May
  • Grade 11 and Grade 6 – 20 May
  • Grade 10 and Grade 5 – 3 June
  • Grade 9 and Grade 4 – 17 June
  • Grade 8 and Grade 3 – 1 July
  • Grade 2 and Grade 1 – 8 July
  • Grade R – July 15

Mweli said, “Teachers and pupils will have to sanitise hands before entering the classroom.

The movement of learners in classes will be limited and there will be no clustering of desks in the classroom.

The physical distance in the classroom will include not more than two learners sharing desks. Both teachers and learners are expected to wear masks at all times.”

The department protocols advise that schools must ensure the following:

  • No hugging, handshaking and direct contact must be avoided
  • Cloth masks to be worn by learners and teachers at all times
  • No mass public events
  • Sport matches, choral practices, festivals and eisteddfods are not permitted
  • Extra classes should be arranged in small groups to maintain social distancing
