Vosloorus man arrested for faking his son’s kidnapping

On Thursday 2019-09-05 a case of Carjacking and Kidnapping was reported at Vosloorus SAPS. It was alleged that on Wednesday 2019-09-04 at about 19:30 the complainant arrived at his home. He was driving a silver VW Polo Vivo and was accompanied by his 10 year-old son.

It is alleged that as he was about to get out of the vehicle to open the gate he was approached by 3 unknown men and one pointed him with a firearm and demanded his vehicle. He was forced to lay on the back seat with his son and they were blindfolded while the suspects drove to an unknown location.

He was then informed that the suspects were Nigerians and in need of R30 000-00 to go back to Nigeria. The next day the complainant was given back his cell phone and taken to his house to arrange for the R30 000-00 while the suspects kept his son and vehicle as security.

He wasn’t allowed to contact the Police but instead, he contacted his employer to assist with the money. The employer indicated that if they can receive a SAPS Case number then they may help him. A case was then opened and a special task team deployed to assist the investigation officer.

“The investigation revealed that the complainant deliberately lied under oath and his vehicle was repossessed by the bank and R30 000-00 was needed to get the vehicle back. His son was found safe with his mother in Soweto. A case of Perjury was opened and the complainant was arrested and charged,” said Captain Rossouw

“SAPS dedicated many resources including unnecessary manpower which could have been used elsewhere to combat crime to investigate the false carjacking case.”

Cpt Rossouw concluded by saying that: “The community need to take note that the reporting of false cases will not be tolerated and can lead to perpetrators being arrested.”
