Hunger is a pressing challenge that many South Africans deal with daily. 3M South Africa collaborated with Meals on Wheels to provide meals for over 7334 people in Denver Informal Settlement, Braamfontein Homeless Centre, Vrededorp Homeless Centre and Selby Informal Settlement, on Thursday 6 December 2018.
The partnership with Meals on Wheels forms part of 3M’s 65 years celebration in South Africa. It is part of the company’s corporate social investment strategy which focuses on education, community development and environment. 3M started importing adhesive tapes in the country and business grew within a short space of time, the company then established its first manufacturing plant in the country.
“3M is committed to improving lives and building sustainable communities that is why, we have partnered with Meals on Wheels to serve thousands of meals in the said communities. Their work in the community embodies our purpose to make a real impact in communities,” says Devan Pillay, Managing Director of 3M South Africa Region.
Meals on Wheels as an organisation focuses on four main areas, which are food security, poverty alleviation, self-sustainability and fundraising. The organisation currently serves over two million meals a month to more than 12 million hungry South Africans.
“We are grateful for the contribution that 3M has made in enabling us to do our work and improve the quality of life for our beneficiaries. With high incidents of poverty, we have found that younger women with children, orphans and child headed households that need our services. Contributions from corporates such as 3M enable us to do our work effectively,” says Gina Cohen, PR and Marketing Manager, Meals on Wheels.
Meals on Wheels works to support disadvantaged members in different communities in the country, focusing on the poorest of the poor. The organisation provides skills development and empowerment opportunities to young people in need, helping them to become self-sustainable.
“I am grateful to Meals on Wheels for the meals they provide us, it makes a difference in my life, says Kgothatso Molefe, a community leader from the East Rand, who is one of the Meals on Wheels beneficiaries.

As we look back on our 65 years journey in South Africa, we remain committed to advancing community development,” adds Pillay.
