Grocery prices increase during lockdown

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown Stats SA has actively tracked the price changes for essential goods.

The new data suggests that prices increased by 0.2% since weekly data was first collected at the beginning of the lockdown.

Grocery prices increase during lockdown

The graphic shows the price increase and decrease since the lockdown began.

Stats SA said that five of the nine food categories decreased in the most recent week, including bread and cereals (-0.2%), meat (-0.5%) and vegetables (-1.8%)

 

Price increases include,

  • Fruit and other foods increased by 6.5% and 1.7% respectively
  • Dishwashing liquid 2.5%
  • Toilet cleaners 2.2%
  • milk, eggs and cheese (2.6%)
  • oils and fats (2.4%)
  • the health index increased by 1.3%
  • the recreation index increased by 1.6%

 

Decrease in prices include:

  • Bread and cereal prices decreased by 0.2% in the week ending 23 April
  • Rice prices decreased by 2.8%
  • Sweet biscuits prices decreased by 2.6%
  • Frozen pastry prices decreased by 11.4%
  • Margarine prices decreased by 5.6%
  • Toothpaste prices decreased by 6.4%
  • Hot beverages decreased by 1.1%
  • Cold beverages decreased by 0.7%
