Family of three perishes in flames

Despite the frantic intervention by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, the lives of three family members could not be saved after their home caught fire in Katlehong over the weekend.
A search and rescue team found charred remains of a toddler believed to be three months old, a four- year-old boy and their mother in a burnt bedroom.
“A RDP house in flames was reported and received by City of Ekurhuleni emergency life threatening Call Centre on Friday evening in Dikole section Katlehong. Firefighters from Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations responded promptly to the scene for life saving interventions.
“On arrival, commanding flames were from the bedroom and the entire roof had already collapsed. Information received on scene stated that the family was still trapped inside.
After fire extinguishment the search and rescue was conducted where the charred bodies of a toddler, a four-year-old boy and the mother aged in the mid-thirties, were found in the burnt bedroom,” said Disaster & Emergency Management Services.
The cause of the fire is still the subject of an investigation however, it is alleged to have been caused by an electrical heater left unmonitored.
