Covid-19 Myth Busters.

It’s important to know the difference between fact and fiction, here are some common myths regarding Covid-19 as explained by the World Health Organisation.

 

  1. Myth: Hydroxychloroquine can cure Covid -19

 

  • FACT. There are currently NO drugs licensed for the treatment or prevention of Covid-19. While several drug trials are ongoing there is currently no proof that Hydroxychloroquine or any other drug can prevent or cure Covid-19.

 

  1. Myth: Spraying or introducing bleach or another disinfectant into your body can protect you against Covid -19

 

  • FACT: DO NOT under any circumstances spray or introduce bleach or any other disinfectant into your body. These substances can be poisonous if ingested. Bleach and disinfectant should be used carefully to disinfected surfaces only. Remember to keep chlorine ( bleach) away from children.

 

  1. Myth: 5G Mobile Networks spread Covid -19

 

  • FACT: Viruses cannot travel on radio waves or cell phone networks. Covid-19 is spreading in many countries that do not have 5G Mobile Networks.

 

  1. Myth: Exposing yourself to the sun or to temperatures higher than 25 degrees prevents Covid – 19.

 

  • FACT: You can contract Covid-19 , no matter how sunny or hot the weather is. Countries with hot weather have reported cases of Covid-19

 

  1. Myth: Holding your breath for 10 seconds or more without coughing or feeling discomfort means you are free from the coronavirus or any other lung disease.

 

  • FACT: Holding your breath for 10 seconds or more without coughing or feeling discomfort DOES NOT mean you are free from the coronavirus.
  • You cannot confirm it with this breathing exercise, which can be dangerous.
  • The only way to confirm if you have Covid-19 is with a laboratory test.

 

  1. Myth: Drinking alcohol can protect you against Covid -19.

 

  • FACT: Drinking alcohol DOES NOT protect you against Covid -19

 

  1. Myth: Taking a hot bath or shower can prevent the Coronavirus

 

  • FACT: Taking a hot bath or shower WILL NOT prevent the Coronavirus.
  • Your normal body temperature remains at around 36.5 – 37 degrees regardless of the temperature of your bath of shower.
  • Taking a hot bath or shower with extremely hot water can be harmful.

 

  1. Myth: Are hand dryers effective in killing the new Coronavirus?

 

  • FACT: Hand dryers ARE NOT effective in killing the coronavirus. You should frequently clean your hands with an alcohol based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
  • Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels.

 

  1. Myth: Can eating garlic help prevent contracting the new Coronavirus?

 

  • FACT: There is NO evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new Coronavirus.

 

  1. Myth: The new Coronavirus only affects older people.

 

  • FACT: People of all ages can be infected. Older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.
  • The World Health Organisation advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus.

 

  1. Myth: If you contracted the new coronavirus, you will have it for life.

 

  • FACT: If you contracted the new coronavirus, it DOES NOT mean you will have it for life.
  • Most people recover and eliminate the virus from their bodies. If you have a cough, fever and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early.
